Maxims Holdings, a diversified Board of Investment (BOI) company, has turned the roof of its modern warehousing complex at Old Road, Mulleriyawa into a solar power plant, with the installation carried out by First Energy.

The project at a glance

  • System capacity: 640 kWp
  • Annual generation: about 880 MWh
  • Carbon reduction: 627 tonnes of CO2 a year
  • Site: warehousing complex on 4.5 acres, Mulleriyawa

The system forms part of the company's sustainability strategy, lowering energy costs and reducing reliance on grid electricity. A company official noted that large commercial roofs make strong financial sense for solar, especially with the option of selling surplus power back to the grid.

The project also supports the national goal of generating 70 per cent of Sri Lanka's electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Maxims Holdings plans a second warehouse phase of 75,000 square feet, taking its total warehousing area to 140,000 square feet.
